Beer sales in Germany fell by almost 7% in the first five months of the year, despite the good weather in spring and summer. According to brewers, this decline is even greater than during the coronavirus pandemic, which informs Gazeta.Pl .
The German brewing industry states the influence of the factor of declining interest from many consumers.
"Currently, the beer market is experiencing a decline unprecedented since the reunification," said Rainer Emig, sales director of one of the companies.
According to the expert, the industry-wide losses of about 2.3 million hectoliters from January to May compared to the same period last year are about twice as high as the typical annual decline in the shrinking beer market in Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, the market lost more than 400,000 hectoliters. Even in pandemic 2021, with its quarantine due to the coronavirus, it was possible to sell more beer, and it will be difficult for the industry to compensate for unexpectedly high losses later in 2025.
It would seem that the hot weather in the first half of the year should have helped brewers and the catering industry, but this did not happen. People still refrained from spending money without buying a second or third mug of beer.
