The Russian government has supported a bill to establish a new memorable date on April 9 — the Day of the Heroic Assault and Capture of Konigsberg.
The initiator was a member of the Federation Council from the Kaliningrad region, Alexander Shenderyuk-Zhidkov. Today, June 9, he briefly wrote in his telegram channel:
"I thank the government for supporting our initiative"
Kaliningrad social activist Maxim Makarov clarified that the senator had been seeking this most important state decision for several years.
"[Alexander Shenderyuk-Zhidkov] heard the request of the veteran and patriotic community to approve the name of the memorable date in exact accordance with what it is called in the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR "On the establishment of medals "For the capture of Budapest", "For the capture of Konigsberg", "For the capture of Vienna" and "For the capture of Berlin" dated June 9, 1945 and in the text of the certificate to the medal "For the capture of Konigsberg". Veterans have repeatedly told me that they are saddened by the fact that every year at memorable April events, in the media and in speeches by government officials, the word "heroic" is omitted and everyone simply says/writes "storming Konigsberg,"— Makarov said.
EADaily reminds that one fact speaks about the significance of the victory over this German fortress: in the Great Patriotic War, medals were established for the capture (or liberation) of capitals. And the only award dedicated only to the city in the administrative-territorial sense is the medal "For the capture of Konigsberg".
