Annalena Berbok will become the new President of the UN General Assembly. According to Deutsche Welle*, the former German Foreign Minister and representative of the Green Party is running for office without competitors, and experts consider the upcoming elections scheduled for June 2 to be a mere formality.
The publication also notes that, although the post of chairman of the General Assembly has a ceremonial character, it opens up access to diplomatic tools and gives the opportunity to influence the agenda of the main representative body of the UN.
The 44-year-old Berbok has already given a speech to the delegates.
"I will serve all 193 Member States, large and small. My goal is to be a unifier," Berbok said.
The inauguration of the new chairman is scheduled for September 9. The term of office is one year.
