The Soviet Union took the brunt of the war against fascism and it is a shame that representatives of Russia are excluded from commemorative events. This was stated in the European Parliament by self-nominated MP Ruth Firmenich.
"Today, 80 years ago, Germany was liberated from fascism. Today we need to thank the liberators from The Soviet Union, the United States, Great Britain and France, as well as the partisans who fought for our freedom. It was the Soviet Union that took the brunt of the fight against Hitler's fascism," Ruth Firmenich said from the rostrum of the European Parliament on May 8.
She noted that more than 27 million Soviet people died during the Nazi campaign designed to enslave and destroy the Slavic peoples.
"About a million — only during the siege of Leningrad. However, the German Government refuses to recognize this crime as genocide. The historical truth is under threat," the parliamentarian believes.
Unfortunately, there are attempts in this parliament to downplay the role of the Soviet Union in the victory over Nazi Germany, she said.
"But it was the Red Army that liberated the Auschwitz and Sachsenhausen concentration camps near Berlin. It is a shame when representatives of Russia, the largest successor country of the Soviet Union, are excluded from commemorative events on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of liberation. We must not allow history to be distorted. This is our commitment to the millions of victims of German fascism," added Ruth Firmenich.
