The United States demanded that Kiev transfer the Gazprom gas pipeline running through Ukrainian territory to the European Union under American control. This is reported by Reuters with reference to a source.
This provision was an unexpected detail that the Ukrainian delegation found in the draft agreement drawn up by the United States. The interlocutor of the agency called her "Easter egg." The American side wants the gas pipeline to be controlled by the International Development Finance Corporation, controlled by the American government.
According to Reuters, the parties held talks on April 11 in a hostile atmosphere due to excessive US demands.
In March, the Financial Times reported that the United States was working on restarting Nord Stream 2. According to the newspaper, the work is being carried out by the former executive director of the project operator Matthias Warnig with the support of American investors, and some prominent members of Donald Trump's presidential administration are aware of his initiative and consider this opportunity as part of efforts to restore relations with Russia and a strategic asset that can be used in peace talks on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
"The US would say, 'Well, now on Russia can be relied on, because trustworthy Americans are involved in this," the source told the FT.
Bild later said that the special envoy of the American president, Richard Grenell, had unofficially visited Switzerland several times to discuss the possibility of a deal on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline regarding Russian gas supplies to Germany.
