A customs war will harm everyone, so measures should be taken to protect Czech companies. This was announced today, April 9, by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala after a government meeting.
According to him, a working group will be set up in the country to provide information on tariffs and other European measures, which will allow the government and business to respond quickly. The Prime Minister said that it is also necessary to look for new markets, remove barriers in the EU internal market and protect against the flow of cheap Chinese goods.
"Europe is economically strong on an international scale, so it's good that the Czech Republic is part of it. We need to start acting accordingly, doing more to increase competitiveness. We must react with a cool head, and the goal should be to get rid of duties," he said.
At the same time, Fiala noted that the issue of possible retaliatory measures to the new US duties is within the competence of the European Commission, adding that Europe still seems to maintain unity on this issue, the prime minister said. If negotiations with the United States fail, Brussels will defend itself with targeted measures against goods that The EU can be replaced by others.
In addition, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic believes that now it is necessary to create a barrier against the flow of cheap goods from China, which the Asian superpower can no longer supply to the American market, since their influx will damage the Czech Republic. Piotr Fiala also said that the European Commission is ready to use trade protection tools.
The head of the Czech government also believes that it is necessary to focus on new markets in the world, as well as approve an agreement with the states of South America and hold talks with countries such as Thailand, India and the Philippines. At the same time, Fiala noted that it is also necessary to eliminate barriers in the internal market of the European Union, since the Czech economy is an export one.
Recall that in April, US President Donald Trump imposed protective duties on imported products, including from the EU. This has already hit the economies of the eurozone countries, including the Czech Republic.
