US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that the most likely cause of the death of American soldiers in Lithuania was the collapse of the shore of a swampy reservoir.
During a conversation with reporters, Trump confirmed the information of the US military about the discovery of the bodies of three missing soldiers in Lithuania. The US president also said that the fourth, most likely, also died, although officially his search continues.
"The transport in which they were traveling was very heavy. Everything indicates that the shore of the reservoir collapsed under its weight. It was night. It was cold, dark and very slippery because of the ice. The vehicle most likely slid and overturned," the American leader said.
According to a statement from the US military, military divers continue to search the marshes in search of the last missing. Rescue dogs and special radars are used in the operation.
The soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division of the US Army were sent to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which began in 2014 as a response to the US annexation of Crimea by Russia.
