American diplomats asked to exclude assistance to Ukraine from the order of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to freeze aid programs to other countries for 90 days, the Financial Times writes, citing documents and sources.
Representatives of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the State Department asked Rubio to cancel the order to employees of the Agency for International Development (USAID) responsible for helping Kiev to stop their work.
"We do not know yet whether this request will be approved in full or in part, but for now from There are positive signals from Washington," says an email sent to USAID employees on Ukraine on Saturday.
Despite the order of the Secretary of State, USAID on Ukraine has suspended the decision to stop work until it can clarify for its partners, some of the partner organizations reported. However, as the FT writes, by Saturday evening some organizations in Kiev began to receive orders to stop working.
In an internal telegram sent on Friday to The State Department and USAID, Rubio instructed to suspend all new payments of foreign aid. Employees were ordered to "immediately issue work stoppage orders."
