US President Donald Trump has ordered that transgender female prisoners be sent only to men's prisons. It is reported by The New York Times.
"The move was part of a wide-ranging executive order issued by Trump on his first day in office designed to limit the government's recognition of a person's gender by his gender at birth," the newspaper writes.
It is noted that the directive on prisoners also applies to detained migrants.
Advocates for the rights of transgender people and prisoners criticized the order, saying it would put them in danger.
"Because of this policy, there will be rapes and physical assaults," said Shannon Minter, legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, which represented the interests of transgender prisoners.
Recall, Trump issued a decree according to which only two sexes are recognized in the United States — male and female, and also banned the display of the LGBT flag on government buildings. According to Trump's decree, "attempts to eradicate the biological reality of gender harm women by depriving them of dignity, safety and well-being."
