German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, dissolved the Bundestag. Early elections are scheduled for February 23.
"Taking into account the vote of no confidence, the government no longer has a majority. In the discussions, I did not see a majority for the government in a different composition. That is why I am convinced that new elections will be the right way for the good of our country," Tagesspiel quotes the German president.
According to Steinmeier, in these difficult times it is necessary to ensure the stability of the government, and for this a reliable majority in parliament is needed.
As reported by EADaily, in early November, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who is chairman of the FDP (FDP). After that, the "traffic light" coalition, which had led the country since 2021, collapsed. On December 16, the majority of Bundestag deputies rejected a vote of confidence in Scholz's government, thereby paving the way for early parliamentary elections.
