The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol gave Poland a farewell speech on the eve of its semi-annual EU presidency.
"Poland will assume the presidency at a crucial moment for the EU economy," Fatih Birol said in Brussels, BiznesAlert reports. He believes that the European Union has made three mistakes: it allowed itself to be dependent on Russia, abandoned nuclear power and allowed China to overtake itself in the field of green technologies.
The EU needs a new plan for the industry because it needs to correct three historical mistakes that it has made, the head of the IEA said.
The first is to "rely on one country." The second mistake is that Europe has turned its back on nuclear energy.
"20 years ago, 30 percent of the electricity in Europe was produced by nuclear energy," Fatih Birol said.
According to him, the third mistake is that the EU has lost control over the market of equipment for green power plants: if earlier the EU accounted for the production of 60% of solar panels, now China accounts for 80%.
"The Polish presidency will come at a key moment, I hope you will take it seriously," Fatih Birol urged the Polish authorities.
