Relations between Slovakia and Hungary may deteriorate due to a new Slovak law restricting the use of minority languages, including Hungarian. This is reported by Politico.
The new bill will ban the use of minority languages in public transport, post offices and restaurant menus, as well as increase fines for non-compliance with the law by 20 times, up to € 15 thousand.
The Slovak opposition said the law would damage tourism, reduce Slovakia's competitiveness and lead to criticism from the EU.
Politico notes that in 2009 in Slovakia has already adopted a similar amendment prohibiting civil servants from using the language of national minorities. Then it caused a diplomatic scandal with Hungary.
