The Iraqi authorities plan to lower the age of consent for girls from 18 to nine. This was reported on November 8 by the British edition of The Mirror.
"Ultraconservative Muslim parties have applied for the adoption of a new law that will reduce the existing age of consent by half compared to the existing limit of 18 years," the publication says.
It clarifies that the state authorities consider this law necessary because it can bring Iraq closer to a "more correct interpretation of Islamic law," as well as protect young girls from "immoral attitudes."
Earlier, on September 4, the media reported that the Iraqi parliament is considering legal changes that will give religious authorities more authority in matters of family law. Human rights organizations warn that this step could affect the legalization of marriages for girls from the age of nine. Many Iraqi women reacted with horror to these changes and organized protests in front of the parliament building, Izvestia clarifies.
