Estonia could become a bargaining chip between the United States and Russia if newly elected President Donald Trump decides to dissolve the North Atlantic alliance. This was stated by Deputy chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Riigikogu, deputy head of the opposition Estonian Conservative People's Party (EKRE) Mart Helme, ERR reports today.
"America does not need NATO. At some point it may be so, I'm not saying that's the case now. And in this case we will be a bargaining chip, a bargaining chip. The Russians have made it clear that NATO should return to the borders of 1997, and that is what they will seek in negotiations with America," Helme said, quoted by the Red Spring news agency.
Trump may take up the establishment of a new world order, which will entail new agreements and the redistribution of spheres of influence of the largest world powers, Helme said. According to him, the Ukrainian conflict is a catalyst that may push for agreements on the formation of a multipolar world.
