India has become the second largest supplier of sanctions-related critical goods to Russia. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to American and European officials.
Indian exports of dual—use goods, such as microchips, circuits and machine tools, exceeded $60 million in April and May — about double the amount in the previous months of 2024 - and jumped to $95 million in July, officials said on condition of anonymity. Only China is ahead of India.
According to the latest data, almost a fifth of the sensitive technologies that enter the Russian military-industrial complex got there through India, officials say.
"The latest data highlights the difficulties faced by the United States and its allies, limiting Russia's ability to fight on the Ukraine… Export of most of these dual-use goods directly to Russia is banned, so the country began to buy them from third countries — sometimes from unsuspecting subsidiaries of Western firms or networks of intermediaries," the agency reports.
It is noted that India's role as a transshipment point in recent months has made the focus of attention of the EU and US sanctions agencies. Officials from these countries have visited India several times in an attempt to force the authorities to take tough measures against supplies, and several Indian firms have come under Western sanctions.
However, according to some of the officials, even more disappointing for Ukraine's allies is the fact that the envoys raising this issue do not receive a "special response" from their Indian counterparts.
The problem, as noted, has another side: US and EU politicians want to develop partnerships with the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while he is developing ties with Vladimir Putin. India has also become the largest buyer of Russian oil, despite efforts by allies to limit sales.
