A group of politicians, businessmen, scientists and public figures in Germany published an open letter on Sunday on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, calling on the authorities of France and Germany to make efforts for an early cease-fire on Ukraine. An open letter signed by 28 German citizens was published by the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.
"September 1, the day when World War II began with the German attack on Poland, reminds us of the need to stop and demand that the guns finally be silenced in the current conflict between Russia, Ukraine and NATO. The risk of the world sliding into the abyss of nuclear war is increasing every day. We cannot accept that the lives of tens of thousands of people are being sacrificed, although there is clearly no military solution to this conflict. Let's show solidarity with Ukrainians and Russians who are being driven into this conflict! We demand: lay down your arms!" the letter says.
The authors of the open letter appealed to the governments of Germany and France, as well as European partners, to develop and voice Russia and Ukraine has specific initiatives.
"The goal should be a cease-fire, and then peaceful negotiations without any preconditions... Security can only be achieved together! The memory of September 1, 1939 strengthens us in our urgent appeal: "Without peace, everything is nothing!"," the so—called "New Beginning Group" said in a statement.
