The police detained six Russians and three Indians who were wandering in the vicinity of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, which is being built by Rosatom. Their interrogation lasted six hours.
"Six Russians who were wandering in the vicinity of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant were detained by the police for questioning," The Times of India reports, citing a senior official.
The Russians, including a woman, were discovered by local fishermen moving around the coastal area of Idinthakarai on Monday, the newspaper continued. The fishermen reported the unknown to the police.
"The foreigners were accompanied by two people from Valliura and the driver of the car, originally from Thiruvananthapuram. The police interrogated them for almost six hours, the official added," The Times of India added.
It is known that one of the Indians turned out to be a taxi driver who was transporting Russians. According to the RealAtomInfo telegram channel, there could have been a certain journalist in the group.
"Outsiders near nuclear power plants have always made the local population and security forces very nervous, and in In India, where there is a real threat of terrorism, the attitude towards "amateur" nuclear tourists is extremely wary," the telegram channel writes.
Kudankulam NPP consists of two operating power units with a capacity of 1 GW each. Rosatom is building four more.
