US President Donald Trump is ready to leave Iran without a nuclear deal if he fully opens Hormuz. It is reported by The Wall Street Journal with reference to American officials.
"For several weeks, President Trump has been preparing to declare victory in the Iranian war if Tehran fully opens the Strait of Hormuz, even privately telling advisers that he was ready to leave without a nuclear deal, American officials said," the publication says.
Washington believes that after the destruction of three key nuclear facilities, Iran is unlikely to be able to restore the program during the Trump presidency, and new attempts will be detected by American intelligence.
However, negotiations on the opening of the strait became complicated after Iran put forward new demands on Saturday. Now he demands a final end to the war, the lifting of the American naval blockade, the withdrawal of US troops from the region, the lifting of sanctions, the unfreezing of Iranian assets and the payment of billions of dollars in war reparations.
The American president had previously stated that American taxpayers' money would not be paid to Iran. However, the agreement may provide for the unfreezing of part of Iranian assets and the lifting of the blockade of ports if Tehran fully opens the Strait of Hormuz, writes WSJ.
"The Iranians are completely confident that Trump wants to get out of the war and is focused on opening the strait, so they are negotiating hard," commented Eurasia Group expert Gregory Brew.
Earlier, Trump called the termination of the Iranian nuclear program the purpose of the operation.
As EADaily reported, Iran listed the conditions for unblocking the Strait of Hormuz to the United States. The corresponding statement was published by the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of the country, Mohammad-Bagher Zolgadr, the telegram channel "Donald Trump in Russian" reported.
The statement lists the conditions for unblocking shipping in The Strait of Hormuz to "correct the behavior" of the United States.
