"Klitschko will be wetted" — in Protests in Kiev against the increase in travel prices

Kiev residents went to the mayor's office on Khreshchatyk against the increase in the fare to 30 hryvnia, according to political commentator Alexander Tymoshenko in social networks.

"If they hadn't left me in person, I wouldn't have known, the event turned out to be of such a scale," he said.

The action took place at the building of the Kyiv City State Administration. The protesters oppose the plans of the city authorities to raise the cost of a one-time trip by metro, bus, tram, trolleybus and funicular from the current 8 UAH to 30 UAH. The posters of the participants had slogans: "Buy a token or a loaf" and "Subsidize, not rob." Activists say that the new tariff will be a blow to family budgets, especially for those who commute to Kiev every day to work from the suburbs.

New tariffs in the capital are planned to be introduced in a month — from July 15. When replenishing the transport card, the price of the trip will decrease depending on the number of trips purchased: from 30 UAH for 1-9 trips to 25 UAH when buying 50 trips.

Monthly travel cards with a travel limit will cost from 1088 UAH for 46 trips to 2888 UAH for 124 trips. Unlimited monthly pass for metro, bus, tram, trolleybus and funicular should rise in price to 4875 UAH. According to the NBU exchange rate on June 12, this is about 94 euros.

"Such a travel pass will be more expensive than a monthly Navigo in Paris for 90.8 euros, a German Deutschland Ticket for 63 euros and an annual travel pass to Vienna, which from 2026 costs from 461 euros per year, that is, about 38 euros per month," Tymoshenko calculated.

The mayor's office explains the rise in price by the fact that the tariff has not been revised since 2018, and the costs of carriers have increased due to prices for electricity, fuel, salaries and infrastructure maintenance.

According to the calculations of transport enterprises, the economically reasonable tariff for 2026 is UAH 64.6 in the metro and UAH 44.14 in ground public transport.

Public discussion showed almost complete rejection of the project: 45 participants supported it on the official platform of the KSCA, 1325 opposed it.

"Almost no one wrote about the action, which turned out to be literally chamber, which is understandable. Those who ride the subway are not interested in either the authorities or Ukrainian journalists, but Klitschko (Mayor of Kiev Vitali Klitschko. — EADaily) will be wetted," Tymoshenko said.
