The referendum on joining the EU, which the leaders of the EAEU strongly recommended to the leadership of Armenia, will not be held. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this today, June 1, explaining that it was "illogical" to do so.
"We are working in the Eurasian Economic Union and will continue to work until the moment when the choice between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union becomes inevitable. And the decision, of course, will have to be made by the people of the Republic of Armenia through a referendum," Pashinyan said in a video message. — Therefore, we will continue to work in the EAEU calmly, without controversy. And I am sure that we still have potential in this direction, which we will use in the near future."
Thus, Pashinyan rejected the appeal of the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, who in a joint statement on August 29 called on Armenia to hold a referendum on the choice between The EU and the EAEU.
"We share the position on the need to hold a national referendum in the Republic of Armenia as soon as possible on joining the European Union or continuing to be part of the Eurasian Economic Union," the statement said.
As EADaily reported, today Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on his birthday. He also stated that the relationship Russian Federation and Armenia has a friendly character, there is an interest in development.
