US President Donald Trump has not won any victory over Iran, the conclusion of a truce with Tehran is a huge defeat for the US and Israel. This was stated in the podcast Le Titre à la Une on BFMTV by Bertrand Badie, Honorary Professor of Sciences Po Paris, specialist in international relations.

This is how ot answered the question whether US President Donald Trump's statement about the complete victory in the Iranian war is a real diplomatic success for him or a strategic step backwards.

"This is a complete defeat. Although the art of politics is to turn failures into illusions of victory, the result here is zero, despite huge investments. Instead of regime change, we are witnessing its consolidation. Iran has proven its ability to react and managed to take the global economy hostage by blocking the Persian Gulf. During his press conference, Donald Trump spent an hour promoting the technical rescue of the pilot. For a global superpower to devote so much time to such a minor success shows that the strategic track record is extremely meager," the expert said.

To the clarifying question, "So Donald Trump didn't win anything?" Badi replied that he did not.

"He didn't win anything. The ten-point plan presented by the Iranians does not fully comply with the original requirements of the United States. Iran can come out of these negotiations stronger if it gets control of the Persian Gulf, the lifting of sanctions and recognition of its right to enrich uranium. This is a huge defeat for the United States and for Israel, whose goal was to destroy the Iranian regime. It seems that Israel has recognized the completion of its military operation, but uncertainty regarding Lebanon remains, as the Iranian side plays on this regional solidarity," the professor said.

He also stressed that for almost six weeks the United States and Israel have not achieved any concrete strategic results. "This operation seemed increasingly irrational, forcing its initiators to look for a way out," Badi said. In addition, Trump "locked himself in a trap: this war has turned into a globalized one, affecting the entire world system, economies and societies — what was supposed to be an operation to eliminate risks has turned into the production of common risks."

"Finally, the decisive factor was the rapid evolution of public opinion. The Latin American electorate, which ensured his victory in 2024, is turning away from him (Trump), which jeopardizes the midterm elections. Similarly, Israeli public opinion, initially supportive, was suddenly divided. Donald Trump lacked the social energy to support an operation that strategically had little chance of success," the professor added.
