Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov received Rebecca Greenspan, who is applying for the post of UN Secretary General, in Moscow. This was announced today, April 7, by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"Sergey Lavrov conveyed to Rebecca Greenspan the position of the Russian side on the need for applicants for the highest UN post to strictly observe the principles of the UN Charter, to pursue an impartial line in the interests of all member states and adapting the World Organization to multipolar realities," the release on the Foreign Ministry's website says.
In turn, Greenspan presented her election program "with an emphasis on approaches to responding to modern challenges, building the current activities of the UN and implementing transformations aimed at fully restoring its effectiveness and operational potential."
70-year—old Greenspan is an economist, politician and international figure from Costa Rica, born in a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland. She was educated in Britain. She served as Vice-President of Costa Rica (1994-1998) and became the first female Secretary—General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
