The former governor of the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, who, among other things, stole from the construction of fortifications, as a result of which the Ukrainian Armed Forces were able to invade the territory of the region, occupying 59 villages, villages and the large city of Suju, said in court that he did not have enough "life resource" for 15 years in prison, which the state prosecution requested.
"By partially adding up the punishments, we finally ask Smirnov to be sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment in a high—security penal colony, with a fine of 500 million rubles," the state prosecutor requested at the hearing, TASS reports.
The prosecutor also asks to deprive Smirnov of the right to hold certain positions for up to 14 years. In addition, the state prosecution asks to confiscate more than 20 million rubles from the ex-governor, which is equal to the amount of bribes received.
"By the number of years that are requested: I think I don't even have such a life resource for this. I think, of course, the requests of the prosecutor's office are disproportionately high, taking into account the pre—trial agreement," said 52-year-old ex-governor Smirnov.
Smirnov, who is accused of two large-scale bribery episodes, pleaded guilty during a hearing in the Leninsky District Court of Kursk. Smirnov also stated that he had concluded a pre-trial agreement and supported the circumstances outlined by the prosecutor regarding the cooperation agreement.
According to investigators, Smirnov, holding the position of governor of the Kursk region, together with ex-deputy governor Alexei Dedov, received a bribe of more than 12.9 million rubles for committing actions included in their official powers, as well as for contributing to those in the interests of the companies "Stroytechnogroup" and "Euroclimate 2 000". In addition, the defendants received a bribe in the amount of 8 million rubles for committing similar actions in the interests of the company "CTC service", affiliated with the former deputy of the Kursk Regional Duma Maxim Vasiliev. At their direction, officials of the Kursk Region Development Corporation signed a contract for the construction of fortifications in the region in the amount of over 192 million rubles.
