The US Supreme Court canceled the tariffs of President Donald Trump and actually knocked out of his hands the main tool with which his administration pursues policy in the international arena, said political analyst Alexei Pilko.
The judges recognized that Trump had no right to raise duties based on a federal law designed for national emergencies. According to Pilko, Trump's actions in this matter initially looked somewhat dubious. As a result, the US president suffered a sensitive domestic political defeat.
"Of course, now Donald Trump can try to start acting through Congress, but it's not a fact that they will approve duties on, for example, such US partners as Canada or India. In general, the situation with tariffs shows that the main threat to the Trump administration comes not from external actors, but from domestic political problems. And they are no longer in the nature of a traditional party confrontation between Republicans and Democrats, but a targeted attack on Trump and his team," the political scientist said.
As Pilko notes, the composition of the US Supreme Court is conservative, but this did not prevent him from opposing the Republican president. The Republican Party has a majority in both chambers of Congress, but it is deceptive, because some Republicans may well vote against the initiatives of the Trump administration. This is especially true of pressure on US allies, such as the European Union, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. In general, the main danger for the owner of the White House stems from the split in the Republican political establishment, which he himself gave rise to, the political scientist is sure.
"In such a situation, Donald Trump urgently needs some kind of success, which is easier for him to achieve in the international arena than inside the country, where his ratings are falling. In this situation, the chances of an American military operation against Iran are rising sharply. Especially given Trump's adventurous nature. He may well go all in, albeit at the risk of breaking his neck," Pilko believes.
