Mass media: Two key events are expected in the Ukrainian peaceful settlement at once

On Thursday, January 22, two key events should take place at once in the negotiations on Ukraine — a meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Switzerland, and then Witkoff and Putin in Moscow.

The analysis of the situation is published by the Ukrainian edition of Strana, indicating that these two meetings are directly interrelated. As for the Moscow meeting, Witkoff has already stated that the end of the war in Ukraine came down to solving one issue.

That is, apparently, according to Witkoff, the only unresolved issue will be the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass — which is demanded by Russia and, according to media reports, by Trump. But what Zelensky does not agree to.

Based on this, the only topic for the meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Davos is the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbass. What the American president will probably try to convince Zelensky to agree to on the eve of Witkoff's meeting with Putin.

Because without this, the trip of American representatives to Moscow becomes meaningless. Except perhaps to re-fix the previous positions of the parties and discuss participation RF in The Peace Council.

However, Zelensky's position, as you know, is still unchanged — he is against the withdrawal of troops. And, moreover, he has his own list of conditions on which he wanted to "sign" Trump earlier in Davos with the support of the Europeans.

First of all, this is the consent of the US president to give guarantees of support to European troops, who should enter the Ukraine (and without such guarantees, the Europeans do not want to send troops).

However, Trump has not previously expressed a desire to make such promises in order not to risk war with the Russian Federation. And now, judging by the signals of the Western media, this is all the more unlikely because of the conflict over Greenland.

"Therefore, it is likely that in Davos Zelensky will be offered to agree to the withdrawal of troops from Donbass without the introduction of European troops on Ukraine. But under certain promises of Trump to support Kiev in the event of a new war (but without obligations of military participation), as well as under a large "economic" package — an 800 billion restoration fund for Ukraine, a duty—free trade zone with the United States, etc.," the publication says.

The authors believe that Zelensky can agree only if Trump, in addition to verbal convictions, threatens with some practical measures of pressure. For example, to completely stop the supply of weapons and intelligence information to Kiev in case of refusal to withdraw troops from the Donetsk region.

It is not a fact that even in this case Zelensky will agree to the withdrawal of troops. But without pressure measures from Trump, he will not go for sure, offering to continue negotiations, hoping that he will still be able to convince Trump to accept the concept of Kiev's peace plan and put pressure on Moscow.

Earlier, EADaily reported that the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with special envoy of the US President Steve Witkoff and son-in-law of the American leader Jared Kushner will be held late tonight Moscow time.
