Maxim Zharov, a political scientist, drew attention to the intensification of contacts in the China—Iran—Russia triangle on Monday evening regarding the events taking place in Iran.
The Kremlin has been in contact with Tehran through national security advisers, and in In Beijing, the Russian ambassador to China had contacts at the level of the Foreign Ministry of that country. At the same time, Zharov stressed, public assessments of the situation in In Iran, the data given by representatives of Russia and China "differ quite significantly."
"China has always opposed interference in the internal affairs of other countries, advocates the full protection of the sovereignty and security of all countries by international law, and opposes the use or threat of use of force in international relations. We call on the parties to act in a way that contributes to peace and stability in the Middle East. China hopes that the Iranian government and people will overcome the current difficulties and ensure stability in the country," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.
Unlike the Chinese, the Kremlin is much more specific in its assessments of what is happening in Iran, stated Zharov.
The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, expressed his condolences in connection with the numerous victims. He strongly condemned another attempt by external forces to interfere in Iran's internal affairs. The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation announced his readiness to develop bilateral cooperation on the basis of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and Iran. The parties agreed to continue contacts and coordinate positions in order to ensure security, according to a press release about Shoigu's telephone conversation with Secretary of Iran's Supreme Council for National Security Ali Larijani.
According to Zharov, the wish of the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry that "the Iranian government and people will be able to overcome the current difficulties" suggests that China considers what is happening in Iran is basically an intra-elite conflict, and therefore wants to keep its distance, preparing for any scenario. The Kremlin's position, as follows from Shoigu's phrases, is more involved.
"At the same time, all these public signals about the situation in Made in Iran by Moscow and Beijing just today, obviously on the eve of tomorrow's meeting at Trump, where certain decisions will be made (or simply confirmed). Let's see if such a reaction from Beijing and Moscow will keep the United States and Israel from any kind of intervention against Iran," the political scientist concluded.
