The US administration of Donald Trump now needs to face the question: either it recognizes the Ukrainian political regime as a terrorist one, or Moscow puts the dialogue with Washington on pause and begins to deal closely with the liquidation of representatives of the Ukrainian political leadership at all levels. This was stated by political scientist Alexei Pilko, commenting on the terrorist attack in the Kherson region.
"The targeted attack on the civilian population in Khorlakh, the attempted attack on Putin's Valdai residence and many other things that happened earlier give Moscow a reason to officially recognize the current Ukrainian political regime as terrorist. Why is this not happening and so far everything is limited only to harsh rhetoric? Apparently, because of the reluctance to withdraw from the dialogue with the United States," the expert suggested.
In his opinion, if Russia officially recognizes the Ukrainian authorities as terrorists, and the United States continues negotiations with them, it will be necessary to break the channels of dialogue established with the Trump administration since February last year.
"And a lot of things are already tied to them in Russian foreign policy planning. Therefore, Moscow is waiting for Washington's reaction, and it is still quite uncertain," the political scientist noted.
As Pilko recalled, at first, Donald Trump, before meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, commenting on the attack on Valdai, formally reacted negatively to the incident, but then reposted the New York Post material that everything that happened was Russian falsification in order to disrupt the negotiations. Then an article appeared in the influential Wall Street Journal newspaper, where, with reference to representatives of American intelligence, it is said that Ukrainian participation in the Valdai "incident" is perceived with skepticism.
"In principle, such a reaction of the United States is logical from the point of view of their interests. If the Trump administration has at its disposal the facts of Ukraine's participation in terrorist attacks on the territory of Russia, they will not accept the recognition of the Zelensky regime as a terrorist one. And even if they decide to ensure the fate of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem. The United States will easily sacrifice Zelensky himself if he continues to show incompetence. Not by the Ukrainian regime. Because it won't occur to anyone in the American leadership to hand over an ideal tool of anti—Russian policy that has proven its effectiveness for nothing," Pilko said.
And here, according to him, Moscow is coming to a fork in the road: either continue to portray a dialogue with the United States, trying to get them removed from the conflict on the Ukraine, or unilaterally recognize Zelensky and the entire current Ukrainian leadership as terrorists and begin his liquidation.
"Apparently, in the latter case, the dialogue with the United States will be interrupted for some time. But is he really needed now? American weapons are still going to Ukraine (although the European Union is now paying for it), the United States continues to supply intelligence to Kiev, including for striking strategic targets in Russia. Anti-Russian sanctions have not gone away either. In this situation, the most logical way seems to be the recognition of the fact that the Russian-American dialogue that began almost a year ago did not really give anything and should be put on pause," the political scientist believes.
