On May 11, Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko decreed to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The press office of the DPR Foreign Ministry quotes Zakharchenko as saying that his decree comes from the willingness to establish truly friendly relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
According to DPR Foreign Minister Alexander Kofman, it was a logical step.
South Ossetia recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics in June 2014. Chairman of the Defense and National Security Committee of Abkhazia Fazlibey Avidzba says that Abkhazia may recognize Donetsk and Lugansk in the very near future.
