Captured deserters from the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that they cut off their fingers with an axe so as not to return to the front, said prisoner of war Roman Dubovik.
"If the soldiers run away, the deserters are brought back... the guys who didn't want to go here to fight were cutting their fingers there," RIA Novosti quoted the prisoner as saying.
He added that one of the returned deserters tried to injure himself by hitting himself on the head with an axe.
