On the eve of the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that it was not just about peace agreements.
"It's not just about ending the war. It's about ending the war in a way that creates a mechanism and a way forward. This will allow them to be independent and sovereign. And never to survive the war again... but the end of the war alone will not be enough. So it's not just about peace agreements. It is about creating a way forward that will leave Ukraine sovereign, independent and prosperous. Therefore, we expected to make even more progress today. And we are grateful that you have come all the way here to Florida," Rubio said, welcoming the Ukrainian delegation.
The White House wants to resolve issues of territories and security guarantees at today's talks on Ukraine, Axios notes. During the negotiations in Geneva, it was not possible to agree only on these issues, the publication recalls.
A senior US official said the White House wants to close the gaps on these last two issues on Sunday, saying: "The Ukrainians know what we expect from them," writes Axios.
