In the first seven months of this year, Turkey increased gas imports by 19% and the lion's share of the growth was offset by supplies from Russia and the USA.
In January-September, Turkish companies purchased 41.1 billion cubic meters of gas from abroad, according to the regulator EPDK. The 19% increase is due to a colder winter and an increase in fuel consumption for electricity generation — the capacity of hydroelectric power plants has fallen in the country.
Most of the additional gas volumes came from Russia and the USA. If Gazprom increased supplies by 2 billion cubic meters to 16 billion cubic meters, then the United States increased supplies by 2.26 billion to 5.55 billion cubic meters. Iran also contributed. Its exports to Turkey increased by almost 700 million cubic meters to 5.41 billion cubic meters.
As a result, Gazprom's total share in Turkish imports amounted to almost 39%, the United States — 13.5%, and Iran — 13.2%.
Azerbaijan has also increased gas supplies to Turkey. But they turned out to be the lowest among the leaders — 350 million cubic meters, up to 8.8 billion cubic meters. The country's share in Turkey's imports amounted to 21.4%.
This situation is obviously due to the fact that Azerbaijan does not have excess fuel, while Gazprom is always ready to quickly and steadily increase supplies. Perhaps Turkish Botas would have bought more gas from Gazprom in the winter, but Turkish Stream and Blue Stream were already operating at over-design capacity. In January, the Russian company supplied a record 2.78 billion cubic meters to the country for two gas pipelines. At the same time, American gas is actively sold on the spot market and Turkish companies have closed the shortage in the winter months. It was during the cold period that the main volumes came from the USA.
