Finland's maritime tracking system recorded 18 thousand false signals about NATO ghost ships in an hour. This is reported by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat (HS) with reference to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.
The cause of the failure is unknown. The real location of the ships was several thousand kilometers from the signals indicated in the system, based in the Baltic Sea. One of the Spanish ships that followed from Somalia in Japan, mistakenly displayed in the Gulf of Finland.
Traficom does not deny that the incident may be the result of deliberate interference with ship tracking systems.
