Roman Protasevich is an employee of the Belarusian intelligence service. This was announced today, October 31, by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
Speaking about the situation around the shipment of cigarettes to Lithuania using weather balloons, which Belarus is accused of, Alexander Lukashenko stressed that opponents abroad are just looking for an excuse to try to "tilt" the Belarusian side. In this regard, he cited one example when sanctions were imposed against Belavia. The reason was the detention of oppositionist Roman Protasevich along with his girlfriend at that time.
"I won't tell you for a long time. Protasevich is an employee of our intelligence service. Should we have detained him? But the question is why they (Ryanair flight. — EADaily) flew to Vilnius, did not board there, but turned around and in Minsk arrived, sat down after a call that they had some kind of explosives on board there… Well, sit down, you flew to Vilnius, you were over Vilnius — sit down. We turned around, flew to Minsk. We sat down in Minsk. I say, "Well, carry out the operation, he was working undercover for these fugitives. Carry out the operation properly," he said.
According to him, "we had to carry out an operation to detain him, although we did not need to detain him."
"He arrived in Greece, he was called there, he reported to the scouts everything that interested us, received a task and flew back. To where he worked, through Vilnius. We were accused of detaining an oppositionist. And he is not our oppositionist. We did not detain the oppositionist. Sanctions have been imposed," Lukashenko said.
Recall that Roman Protasevich was one of the coordinators of the protests in Belarus in 2020, while in Poland. In May 2021, he was detained after an emergency landing of Ryanair's plane in Minsk. He was later pardoned by Lukashenko and is now at large in Belarus.
