The Saatse boot is a small section of Russian territory that cuts into Estonia. There is a road through it, and Russia allows you to drive along it without border control, demanding only not to stop and not to walk. On Friday, Estonia blocked the exit to Saatse's boot, as they were confused by a group of military men.
Details have emerged as to why the Police and Border Guard Department temporarily closed the passage through the Saatse boot. As EADaily reported, the movement of a larger than usual detachment was noticed on the Russian side.
"On Friday, October 10, our patrols noted throughout the day that much more active activity was observed on the Russian side in the Saatse area than usual. We have seen the movements of various armed groups on the border and in the immediate vicinity of it. It was clear from the uniform that they were not border guards," Meelis Saarepuu, head of the Border Guard Bureau of the Luuna Prefecture of the Police and Border Guard Department, told ERR.
"If they were moving along the road at first, then at some point they lined up across the road. It was a clear danger for us. We started stopping cars on both sides of the Saatse boot, explained the situation, warned about patrolling in the area," Meelis Saarepuu continued.
According to him, most of the drivers continued driving, some turned around.
As ERR notes, the border guard service requested information from the Russian side about what was happening in their area, and the Russian side replied that nothing was happening, completely regular events were taking place.
"It was a dangerous situation for us, and we were forced to make a decision to temporarily close the road passing through the Saatse boot," the head of the border guard bureau Saarepuu.
