Cuba's national electric system has been completely shut down after a malfunction at the country's largest thermal power plant, the Ministry of Energy announced on the social network X.
"There was a complete shutdown of the power system, which may be due to the unexpected shutdown of the thermal power plant Antonio Guiteras. The reasons are being clarified. The recovery process has already begun," the Ministry of Energy said.
Previous blackouts due to the shutdown of the CHP occurred in Cuba in November and December 2024.
In 2025, electricity supply in various regions of Cuba was repeatedly interrupted, and the Electric Union of Cuba (ESC) reported insufficient power generation. The local government attributes the energy crisis to financial persecution by the United States and obstacles to the purchase of fuel and modernization of the network of thermal power plants that have been in operation for several decades.
