Ukrainian-type drones can become a serious challenge for China in the West Philippine Sea (part of the South China Sea). This was stated in a comment by Naval News regular author analyst and expert on OSINT H. I. Sutton.
He commented on reports that Ukraine is seeking to deepen defense cooperation with the Philippines through an agreement that could pave the way for the joint production of drones.
"Ukrainian-type drones can become a serious challenge for the People's Republic of China, which is becoming more assertive in the West Philippine Sea. In general, the Philippines, despite several recent acquisitions of warships, will be inferior to China in numbers and armament. But as the war in the Black Sea has shown, small, inexpensive unmanned platforms can change the naval arena and create viable ways to blunt the power of a conventional navy. This is a classic application of asymmetric warfare," Sutton said.
The publication notes that Ukraine's ambassador to the Philippines, Yulia Fediv, said last weekend that both countries were working on signing a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation by October. A high-ranking Ukrainian delegation, including representatives of the Ministry of Defense, is expected to visit Manila.
"If we sign a memorandum of understanding in October this year, we will be able to move forward to joint production (of drones. — EADaily)," Fediv said at a forum organized by the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands.
According to her, the draft agreement has already been submitted to the Ministry of National Defense of the Philippines and is awaiting feedback.
"Now Ukraine is developing various models and proposals (drones) for countries around the world, how we can produce together and how we can share our knowledge and technology. You are our reliable partner in the region. That is why we are open to sharing with you everything we have — both good and hard lessons learned," the Ambassador of Ukraine emphasized.
