Analysts of the consulting company Argus Media claim that in the next agricultural season, which begins on July 1, 2025, Romania is expected to harvest the largest wheat harvest since 1997. This means that in the new year Romania will become one of the main European exporters, as reported by Bloomberg.

After assessing the harvest earlier this month, analysts announced that wheat production in Romania is expected to reach 12.2 million tons in the 2025-2026 season, which will begin on July 1, 2025. For comparison, in the current season, wheat production in Romania is estimated at 10.2 million tons.

According to analysts, the increase in production is due to an increase in yields per hectare, as well as an increase in acreage. Romania's importance in the global wheat market has increased, as evidenced by the fact that the American exchange operator CME Group Inc. It is already using prices from Romanian ports, as well as from neighboring Bulgaria, for its new Black Sea wheat futures contract.

Data from the European Commission show that from the beginning of the current season until April, wheat exports from Romania were higher than from France, which is usually the largest exporter of wheat to the EU. The wheat harvest in France in 2024 was affected by excessive rainfall.

"The harvest of wheat in Romania is expected to begin in the next four weeks, depending on the region, later than last year, as the cold weather slowed down the development of plants," Argus Media analysts said in a report.

At the same time, "forecasts show that in the coming weeks the weather will be warmer and drier, which is a normal situation for Romania, which will not create risks for the wheat harvest at the final stage of development."
