German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is trying to suppress any discussions about the future of Nord Streams and supports sanctions The EU is against the Baltic gas pipelines, which will remove the issue of a possible restoration of Russian gas supplies from the agenda.

Friedrich Merz is known for his negative attitude towards the launch of Nord Streams and supports the idea of the European Commission to impose European sanctions on projects in order to block the restoration of their work in the future. It is reported by The Financial Times, citing sources.

"Merz supported EU sanctions so that gas pipelines would continue to stand idle," the British edition writes.

According to him, the German Chancellor is trying to suppress any discussions in the country about the future of Nord Streams. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen consulted with him before announcing future sanctions, and Merz supported the idea.

September 26, 2022 against two gas pipelines from Russia sabotaged Germany, but one of the two Nord Stream 2 lines remained intact and its launch depends only on the political decision and certification of the project operator — Nord Stream 2.

Sources told The Financial Times that the sanctions The EU can and will be directed against the operator or any other company that will undertake to manage the gas pipeline.

Earlier there was talk that the United States and Russia is negotiating joint project management. At the same time, Reuters interviewed European representatives of gas importers and representatives of the energy-intensive industry in Germany and they advocated the resumption of gas imports from Russia.
