US President Donald Trump has allowed the possibility of signing a bill by Senator Lindsey Graham providing for new sanctions against Russia. He said this in an interview with NBC News.

The Republican clarified that his decision would depend on Moscow's position on the settlement of the conflict. According to him, the United States is striving to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

"It depends on whether Russia will act in the direction of peace. We want a peace agreement. We want Russia and Ukraine agreed to the deal," Trump said.

He also noted that Washington's goal is to preserve both human lives and funds directed to the continuation of hostilities.

Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump's main supporters in the US Congress, yesterday announced support for a bill providing for tougher sanctions pressure on Russia in case of refusal of peace talks with Ukraine.

The draft, prepared by Graham together with Democrat Richard Blumenthal, involves not only new sanctions against Russia, but also the introduction of 500 percent duties on imports from countries that continue to buy energy resources from Moscow - oil, gas, uranium and other raw materials.

According to Graham, the proposed measures will be "crushing" for the Russian economy.

On April 30, Washington and Kiev signed an agreement on joint mining and the creation of a fund for the restoration of Ukraine. This happened shortly after Trump's meeting with Vladimir Zelensky, after which the US president expressed doubts about Moscow's readiness to cease hostilities.

Moscow emphasizes the illegality of Western sanctions and insists on their abolition. The Kremlin points out that the peace agreement requires a direct dialogue with Kiev. Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a temporary truce from May 8 to 11, timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Victory. Zelensky, in turn, took the initiative on a 30-day ceasefire, and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed its readiness to extend it, subject to reciprocal steps by Russia.
