The EU countries can double their military support to Kiev, following the same formula of the American leader Donald Trump, "peace through strength," if the head of the White House does not convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine. Ukraine. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius.
Kubilius pointed out that so far the EU and the US have provided military assistance to Kiev in the amount of about 40 billion euros per year, but, according to him, these funds can be used more efficiently by sending them to purchase cheaper weapons directly from Ukrainian manufacturers.
"This would actually double the amount of weapons that Ukraine receives for the same 40 billion euros. The real cost of our support would grow to 80 billion euros," the European Commissioner wrote on the social network X.
Kubilius also recalled that the EU countries have a new tool to help Ukraine — defense loans to finance military purchases for Kiev.
"This is how the formula "Peace through Strength" can really work in practice. Loans are a strength for Ukraine!" — Kubilius noted.
As reported, as part of the large-scale rearmament plan adopted by the EU this year, the European Commission will provide loans worth 150 billion euros in order to ensure rapid joint procurement and production of weapons. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen argued that new financial opportunities will allow countries to EU to invest in weapons production in Ukraine or unite with local companies to ensure the integration of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex with the European one.
