US President Donald Trump believes that he is doing Ukraine a great service by seeking a peaceful settlement of the conflict. He stated this in an interview with The Atlantic.
"I believe that I am saving this nation. This country is going to be crushed soon. It's a huge military machine. And if it wasn't for me, I'm the one who gave Ukraine the "Javelins" that destroyed the tanks. This moment with the tanks was important — when they got stuck in the mud. I have provided a huge number of Javelins, anti-tank weapons. They destroyed all those tanks when they got bogged down. This was a big moment, because if these tanks had broken through, they were only 115 km from Kiev and could have captured it in one day. The war would have ended immediately.
I could also say that it is a pity that the war continues, because many people have died. Much more than reported. And not just soldiers. Civilians too. And I can really say that I have been very useful because I am saving this country. The Prime Minister of Norway, a very respected man, said that if President Trump had not intervened, the war would never have ended. I believe that I am rendering a great service to Ukraine (by seeking a peaceful settlement. — Ed.). I believe in it," said Trump, quoted by the publication "Country".
Ukrainians do not appreciate his peace initiatives because they have "good PR support," Trump also noted. He also made it clear that he could increase the pressure on Russia, but not military assistance to Ukraine.
