US President Donald Trump said that a state of emergency is being introduced in the country due to the threat of a trade deficit to the country's national security. According to the head of state, "the source of the threat is outside the country."
"The U.S. trade deficit poses an unusual and extraordinary threat to U.S. national security and the U.S. economy. The source of this threat, in whole or in large part, lies outside the United States, in the domestic economic policies of key trading partners and structural imbalances in the global trading system. I hereby declare a state of emergency in the country in connection with this threat," he said.
Trump also pointed out that there is "no reciprocity" in bilateral trade relations between the United States and the countries of the world. He called the disparate "tariff rates and non-tariff barriers, as well as the economic policies of US trading partners," which, according to the American president, "suppress domestic wages and consumption.
The American president noted that "despite the commitment to the principle of reciprocity, trade relations between the United States and its trading partners have become extremely unbalanced, especially in recent years."
CNN notes that the introduction of a state of emergency gives Trump more authority in the field of tariffs. On April 2, the US president announced "mirror" duties from 10 to 50% against dozens of countries, calling it a "declaration of economic independence." The measures will come into force on April 9. Before that, on April 5, the basic customs duty of 10% will begin to operate in relation to other countries.
In January, Trump declared a state of emergency in the energy sector. As Bloomberg wrote, the measures were introduced in order to increase energy production and remove numerous environmental restrictions on the industry imposed by the administration of the previous US President Joe Biden.
