"There is a speck in someone else's gas": Zelensky and Sandu drive their countries into the Middle Ages

Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, a leading analyst at the National Energy Security Fund of Russia, said in an interview with Eurasia.Expert" about how Sandu and Zelensky drove Moldova into a gas impasse.

"Since January 1, 2025, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine has stopped. Both European countries (Slovakia, Austria and others) and Moldova will suffer from this. Russian gas in Transnistria and Moldova came through Ukraine from the north. This is the most cost-effective route. It is technically possible to deliver Russian gas to Moldova and Transnistria from the south. Through the Turkish Stream, it can flow to "Trans-Balkan gas pipeline“ and pass from Turkey through Bulgaria and Romania.
But from Romania the gas pipeline goes to the territory of Ukraine and only then to Moldova. Then the pipe again enters the territory of Ukraine, after which it returns to the Moldovan territory again and only then comes to Transnistria. Therefore, for the supply of gas to Moldova and Transnistria will still need to negotiate transit with Ukraine through the Turkish Stream," the expert says.

Yushkov recalls that after stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, Moldova and Transnistria is faced with its deficit. Chisinau can receive gas for domestic consumption from Romania via the Ungheni—Chisinau gas pipeline, built in 2021. But the capacity of this gas pipeline is not enough even for a full-fledged supply of Moldova.

The Moldavian GRES on the territory of Transnistria, in the absence of gas, is switching to coal. On November 1, the press service of the President of Pridnestrovie reported that a coal reserve of 75 thousand tons had been formed at the Moldavian GRES, which would be enough for two months of operation of the power plant. In case of additional coal supplies to the station, the period of operation in this mode may be extended. However, it is to be expected that MGRES will reduce electricity generation. This will lead to the introduction of an electricity supply schedule for consumers in Transnistria.

The supply of electricity to Moldova will stop completely, which is fraught with a humanitarian catastrophe (the risk of lack of gas, heat, electricity and hot water). The risks will increase under the condition of low temperatures, when energy consumption in any form always increases.

An additional problem for Moldova was the anti-Russian position of its leadership. Hungary and Slovakia has done everything to resolve the energy crisis related to the termination of transit through Ukraine and US sanctions against Gazprombank. And the Moldovan leadership, on the contrary, did everything to aggravate the problem. They accused Russia of the fact that Ukraine refuses to transit Russian gas.

"The problem of gas supplies to Transnistria and Moldova, as in the case of the Europeans, can be solved by signing an additional agreement between Gazprom and "Moldovagaz“ and the transfer of the gas delivery and acceptance point to the Russian-Ukrainian border. In this case, it will no longer be Russian gas that will pass through the territory of Ukraine, but Moldovan gas from the point of view of property rights. But Vladimir Zelensky publicly rejected such a solution to the problem when commenting on the use of this scheme in relation to the transit of Russian gas to the European Union. This means that Kiev will not allow it for Moldova either.
Even if the parties do find a solution to this problem, this will not automatically lead to the resumption of gas supplies to Moldova, since Gazprom announced the termination of the contract. This was caused solely by the anti-Russian position of the Moldovan authorities, because with regard to gas supply contracts in Gazprom has not made a similar decision in Slovakia and other countries," Yushkov sums up.
