The German Sauna Association sets restrictions on access to the women's sauna — only people with the corresponding primary sexual characteristics are still allowed to enter there. This is reported by Apollo News.
Since November 1, 2024, the so-called law on self-determination (SBGG) has been in force in Germany, which allows citizens to change the field record at the registry office every year. The German Sauna Association said that access to gender-oriented areas, such as the women's sauna, is still dependent on biological sex.
"Only persons with the relevant basic sexual characteristics have the right to enter this sauna, especially the women's sauna. Entering the gender in the registry office and/or in the passport is not crucial," says the manual published on the association's website.
The document outlines a multi-step procedure for sauna employees, which begins when placing an order. "Visual inspection of appearance at the checkout (whether a person is perceived as male, female or diverse)" — the first step. In case of any doubt, the staff is obliged to ask the guest to indicate the gender. If there are still ambiguities after that, then, as the manual clearly states, "the guest should be informed that the main sexual characteristic is crucial for access to the appropriate area."
In situations where the suspicion of "unauthorized access" arises only in the sauna, for example, one of the visitors reports this, "the guest will be expelled from the zone ... and the entrance fee will be refunded."
It is noted that guests can "voluntarily prove their main sexual characteristic" in order to clarify misunderstandings, however, "the staff does not directly ask him about it."
If the violated guest does not wish to leave the gender-specific area, "the management of the pool or sauna and the decision-makers legally authorized to represent them should be informed, in order to ensure respect for the rights ... it is necessary to contact the police."
