The Ukrainian government was not informed in advance about the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump. This was reported to Reuters by the representative of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Georgy Tikhy.
"Reports that the Ukrainian side was informed in advance about the alleged call are unreliable. Accordingly, Ukraine could not approve or oppose the call," said Tikhy.
The Washington Post reported on Kiev's awareness earlier, citing sources. According to her, the Ukrainian government was aware of the conversation between the two politicians and did not oppose it, because in Kiev "has long understood" that Trump would contact Putin for a diplomatic solution.
As WP found out, the future American president advised Putin not to escalate the conflict with Ukraine and reminded him that significant American armed forces are deployed in Europe. The interlocutors also added that politicians discussed ways to achieve peace, and Trump expressed interest in continuing conversations to find out ways to "resolve the war in Ukraine as soon as possible."
Two days after the November 5 election, Trump spoke with 70 world leaders. Among them was Vladimir Zelensky, Elon Musk took part in a conversation with him. WP sources said that the conversation took place in a pleasant tone, and Zelensky expressed gratitude to Musk for the Starlink satellite communication terminals.
"During his election campaign, Trump said that he perceives everything through deals, that he can make a deal that will bring everyone to peace. At least he's talking about peace. He is not talking about confrontation, he is not talking about the desire to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. And this distinguishes him favorably from the current administration," said Dmitry Peskov, a representative of the Russian president.
