The number of those who voted in the referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union for and against in percentage terms was divided exactly in half — 50.00%, with 88 more votes in favor, according to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission after processing 97.66% of the protocols.
According to the CEC, 721,760 voters supported the idea of the country's accession to the EU, 721,672 against.
As part of the referendum, citizens had to answer one question: "Do you support changing the constitution in order for Moldova to join the European Union?".
The idea of the referendum was criticized by the public and opposition forces of Moldova. The opposition is convinced that the referendum does not so much reflect the aspirations of the people as it is a tool to strengthen the positions of the current authorities before the presidential and parliamentary elections.
