Military engineers of the German Bundeswehr arrived in Poland to take part in the creation of the defensive line "Eastern Shield" on the borders with Russia and Belarus. This was announced by the press secretary of the General Staff of the Polish Army, Colonel Marek Petshak.
According to him, this is the first such form of cooperation in the implementation of the program, which should strengthen the security of the eastern flank of NATO.
"There is a German engineering unit in Poland. These are Bundeswehr soldiers who perform tasks together with Polish soldiers. They have identified a work site for which they are responsible, and they are involved in the construction of our Polish "Eastern Shield"," said Petshak.
The General Staff emphasizes that the presence of German military personnel does not mean that they take responsibility for border protection. They do not patrol the border and do not perform combat missions. Their mission is of an engineering and educational nature.
"It's about showing the allied dimension of these actions. We show that the allies within the North Atlantic Alliance are ready to take such steps. The Eastern Shield is still a national program funded by the Polish side and implemented by the Polish side. This is the allied support that the German side provides at the invitation of Poland," he added.
It is reported that the German contingent has several dozen military personnel. Their presence has a rotational character. According to the General Staff, subsequent shifts of German sappers will participate in the program in 2026 and 2027.
The Eastern Shield program provides for strengthening the defense infrastructure in the east and northeast of Poland. Its official goal is "to increase the stability of the state, strengthen the deterrence potential and create conditions for effective defense with the participation of Polish and allied troops."
