The American edition of The War Zone (TWZ) has published an estimate of the number of active Russian Tu-22M3 bombers. According to analysts, today in the ranks of the There are about 50 serviceable machines of this type in Russia.
The reason for the calculations was the incident involving the Tu-22M3 in the Irkutsk region. The authors noted that accidents and incidents regularly reduce the fleet of these aircraft, however, despite the losses, the Russian Aerospace Forces maintain a combat-ready grouping.
The publication particularly emphasizes that in addition to the 50 operating machines, there are a number of faulty bombers that can be returned to service after major repairs.
Particular attention in the material is drawn to the fact that the production of the Tu-22M3 was stopped several decades ago. These aircraft were produced during the Soviet period at the Kazan Aviation Plant, and with the collapse of the USSR, their serial production ceased completely. Today, each copy of such a machine has a special value, since it is impossible to make up for the loss due to new production.
