The abolition of the veto power of the member States of the European Union will be the beginning of the end of the community. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico at a meeting with the European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
"The discussion was also about the preservation of the right of veto in the policy that is defined in the European Union agreement, including joint foreign and security policy… The abolition of the right of veto in the main issues of the European Union, according to Robert Fico, would be the beginning of the end of the Union," the message on the official page of the Slovak Prime Minister in one of the social networks says.
According to him, "this is a fundamentally important issue for Slovakia."
"The abolition of the right of veto in the EU on fundamental topics would be the beginning of the end of the community," Fico stressed.
Recall that Brussels is considering changing the functioning of the EU, including in the field of decision-making. However, the ideas of abandoning unanimity and switching to majority voting are controversial within the EU. Critics of such proposals point out that such a reform may deprive individual states of the opportunity to block decisions contrary to their national interests and strengthen the dominance of large countries within the community.
