In Belarus, criminal liability may be threatened for studying at the "European Humanitarian University" (YSU) recognized in the republic as an extremist organization. This was reported in the Belarusian prosecutor's office.
It is reported that since, according to the decision of the Supreme Court, the European Humanities University operating in Vilnius is recognized as an "extremist organization", the activities of the university, its structural units, as well as the use of symbols and paraphernalia are prohibited on the territory of our country.
"From now on, any financial transactions to the university, including tuition fees or charitable contributions, are qualified as financing extremist activities, punishable by up to five years in prison," said Dmitry Kudryavtsev, head of the Vitebsk Region Prosecutor's Office.
According to him, labor relations, teaching or continuing education at YSU are interpreted as "participation in an extremist formation" and they face criminal liability for up to six years in prison.
"In addition, the use of symbols, the distribution of materials, or even the availability of a subscription to the Internet resources of this organization are also grounds for bringing to justice," Kudryavtsev added.
Recall, on April 14 it became known that the Supreme Court of Belarus recognized the YSU as an "extremist organization." The decision came into force immediately. The Prosecutor General's Office noted that the measures were taken on the basis of the law on countering "extremism", and accused the university of providing "methodological, financial and other" assistance to "representatives of radically politicized groups, as well as destructive foreign non-governmental organizations." At the same time, YSU stated that the university "will continue to fulfill its mission as an institution of higher education."
